Where two or three are gathered together in my name
Hello,
This week was pretty great. We had a zone conference with President Bangerter, the President of the Philippines Area Presidency; baptisms for Jerome, Ryan, and Eliseo; continuing to find and teach people; and being called on to talk in sacrament meeting right before it started, first time that has happened in my mission haha, so it was an exciting week.
Tuesday was alright. After some lunch, we then visited several people near the church building. In front of the church, there are a couple small streets/"compounds" where a bunch of members apparently live, but they're nearly all less active/inactive, so we visited a lot of them and learned who they were and where they live so that we can visit them again in the future. Afterwards, we tried to visit Renato at his barbershop, but he was busy, so we instead headed to meet Gloria, someone Elder Secillano has met before, but it was my first time meeting her. It all went well; she's been taught by missionaries before in the past, so we shared a message with her and offered to come by again. Right afterwards, I called Elder Harrison to answer some questions about our Facebook live with a devotional with President and Sister Bangerter that evening, but it got all figured out right before I called to answer their questions, and it went alright.. We then headed across the street to stop by a few more others, but they were busy, so we headed to our dinner appointment with the Manuel family, who were recently baptized in the past year, and the San Pedro Elders, which went alright. Because we only have two bikes, they let the San Pedro Elders borrow a couple bikes they have for a few days, which was nice of them since they otherwise would've had to walk a while to return back to our house haha. We then headed home for the evening to do DFTC work, of course, and as I was saying my nightly prayer, an earthquake hit again haha. Elder Secillano and Elder Abay were already asleep, so Elder Delos Santos and I woke them up and we headed out the door until the shaking stopped haha, but it wasn't too bad, nothing at our house fell or broke, just some light shaking for a while.
Wednesday went well. Elder Secillano and I used their small bikes that we had borrowed last night for the day haha, which was neat. Both of the brakes on the one I used are nearly completely shot, I literally have to use my foot to step on a rope to brake the bike lol, and I bet I look silly riding the small bike haha, but it was honestly one of the smoothest/easiest bikes I've ridden in a while XD Anyways, we biked to the area where the youth lived, and we first met with Crisanto, someone who was baptized a few months ago. He showed us around to a couple of less active and active members whose houses we didn't know of yet haha, which went well, and after he went back home to finish what he was doing, we headed to the neighborhood where the youth live. They still had school, so we just met a bunch of other people there. We first met with Love Faith, someone they met on the street last month or so; she didn't seem too interested, so we'll see where it goes, but it went alright. We then stopped by a couple more people as we tried to find another person that they had met before, and we then headed to meet with Julie. She's the mom of a couple inactive members (one of them was there when we arrived, so we talked with him for a little bit, and he actually lives in that area right across from the chapel haha), and she's someone that Elder Secillano and Elder Ramos met a while ago as well. The youth came back from school right as we were finishing up with her, so we went with Ryan to meet Jerome and Eliseo at their houses so that they could have their baptism interviews, which took quite a while haha. The plan was that while the ZLs interviewed them, Elder Secillano would interview their baptismal candidates at the same time (all of it over the phone and/or video call), which worked out for the most part, but it still took a long time haha, it was the last thing we did for the evening before heading home. Since we hadn't eaten dinner yet, we just picked up sardines to have with some rice at home, and when we arrived, there were 11 Elders in our apartment haha. Because of our conference with President Bangerter tomorrow during his mission tour, 7 Elders came to our apartment to stay the evening, and we have to wake up at 3am tomorrow to arrive on time haha. Anyways, right when we got home, we watched some spider fights, which were actually pretty fun to watch haha, and Elder Secillano and I ate while he had a meeting with the zone leaders and other district leaders
Early Thursday morning, our branch president picked us up in his van to take us to Tuguegarao for our conference with President Bangerter, which was nice of him. At the chapel, we waited for the rest of the Ilagan-Roxas and Tuguegarao Zones to arrive, practiced singing the "As Sisters in Zion/We'll Bring the World His Truth" that my zone would be singing for the conference, and then reunited and/or talked with Elder Gernale and Elder Abor (the last companion of Elder Anor and the last companion of Elder Gernale in Almaguer before it became a Sisters area), which was nice. Remember Jenny/Queenie/Christine, the young women and one of their moms that we taught with the rest of their member family in Almaguer and were helping progress towards baptism? They got baptized, yay! It was nice to hear about that and talk about Almaguer with both of them and about Jones with Elder Abor. Anyways, eventually, we had the conference with President Bangerter, which was pretty great, I loved it. He (and Sister Bangerter and President and Sister Cobing) talked about a bunch of different stuff, but some of the things he talked about confirmed thoughts I'd been having to improve our area in regards to the members and the investigators, especially in regards to using the Book of Mormon more, and he also gave us some pretty inspiring invitations. Anyways, pretty neat, I enjoyed it haha, and the lunch between the sessions of the conference was a bit fancy too, it was all decorated like a fancy restaurant haha; the only sad part was that the only dessert had peanuts, bummer lol. After the conference, we all got pictures with President and Sister Bangerter in our companionships, though I haven't received them back yet. We then drove home, got some dinner, and everyone passed out on our mattresses after a long but good day haha
After some lunch on Friday, we headed to the area in front of the church where all those inactive/less active members are, and we shared a message with a recent convert and her mom who isn't a member, which went well. We were then able to meet with Raffy, the inactive son of Julie, who I met earlier this week, which went alright, and we then met an inactive youth, Erica, and her mom, Gina (not a member), and shared a message with them as well. We then met with Maria, the grandma of a few recently baptized youth, to teach her as well before heading home to drop off the bikes and catch a ride to Roxas to do some baptism interviews for the Sisters there, so for the next few hours, I essentially just hung out with Sister Mandel (the American) and Sister Tiongco (her Filipino trainer) and the families of the two baptismal candidates they had for the next couple of hours while Elder Secillano did the interviews haha, which all went well. It was also raining a ton, especially later in the day as we travelled to and stayed in Roxas, so I was a bit wet haha, but the cool weather feels nice after being so hot for most of my time here in the Philippines haha. We then caught a ride to take us home and picked up some chicken for our late dinner, which we had after another baptismal interview over the phone haha, pretty busy evening.
Saturday was the baptism day, which went well. In the morning, Elder Secillano and I left early to clean and fill up the font (it's outside, underneath our elevated chapel) with Brother Richards, the branch clerk. Usually, the branch mission leader takes care of it and the baptismal program, but we don't have a branch mission leader lol, so we do it ourselves with anyone else who is able to help. We then got home, did some quick planning/studying before heading out again to get some lunch and head back to the chapel to prepare for the baptism. Overall, the baptism went pretty well, even though it was in the middle of another tropical storm and some people weren't able to make it because of the pouring rain haha, and I was able to play the piano again and baptize all three of them. After the program and some snacks, we drove with our branch president to do some quick service that took a few minutes before visiting some people for the evening. We first went to visit Gloria, which went pretty well, and she said that she'll try to come to church before her and her family go somewhere later that day. We then tried to visit Paul, the husband of a member in our branch, but he was busy, so we just met his wife for a little bit before briefly stopping by some other houses nearby and then getting dinner and heading home.
Sunday was a bit interesting haha. Because of the tropical storm going on, sacrament meeting was a lot smaller than usual, which meant Elder Secillano and I helped a lot more with preparing the sacrament before the meeting, blessing the sacrament, and yes, being called on to give talks right before the meeting started, the first time that has happened to me in my 15 months as a missionary haha. Jerome, Eliseo, and Ryan also got confirmed since they were able to make it to church, and after today, it makes me grateful that they are 14/15 and will be able to help as well with the sacrament once they are ordained to the priesthood haha. Afterwards, the branch president and his wife fed us some lunch with the newly confirmed youth, which was nice of them, and after some planning and studies, we headed back out to visit the youth and get signatures from their parents for their baptismal forms. Oh, and by the way, for the whole day, it's either sprinking or dumping rain on us haha, so that's happening while we're visiting all these people. We first visited Crisanto (recent convert), who went with us to meet the Elders Quorum president and his family, and then his wife took us to visit an inactive family as well to get to know them. We then headed to where the youth live and got signatures from their parents. After that, we went to Ryan's house to share a message with him and his mom, Melanie, and their family, which went alright, and we headed back to the house of the other youth to have a quick snack before heading home in the pouring rain, which felt good even if I got soaked haha, overall, a pretty good Sunday.
As always, I hope you all are doing fantastic, and I continue to pray for you all. If there's something specific you'd like me to pray for, please feel free to reach out, I'd love to help by asking our Father in Heaven for help, and I know that He answers my prayers and your prayers as we come to Him in faith and humility with a desire to do good and follow Him.
See you all next week,
Elder Enger
