From biking to walking to driving
Hello,
My week was pretty good. We're still having some difficulties with finding people to teach, but our continual efforts to work with Brother Bodily, the ward council, and other ward missionaries to increase member involvement and strengthen the ward seemed to start to bear some fruit this week, and it seems like the ball has started to roll forward. All in all, we continue to find joy in the work alongside our Heavenly Father.
Before I even get into the week, Elder Bennett's bike completely broke on Monday right before we got to Bruce's, so he drove us home, and we've been walking everywhere we go since then or asking for rides haha, it's been interesting. Anyways, there's some context lol.
Tuesday was district council, which was pretty fun. The zone leaders give us a ride to district council each week, but because they had an appointment right after lunch, they just took us with them to their lesson haha. Elder Bennett and I walked around for a bit to do some street contacting while they were in their lesson, and we actually were able to talk to a woman who may have met with missionaries before as well. She's unfortunately not in our area, but we still got her number, and we're planning on calling her sometime soon to see if missionaries are actually meeting with her. After that, we had a family history meeting zoom meeting at the church, and we continued to do some family history and social media work, make some calls, and walk around the nearby neighborhood. We then got a ride to our dinner, which was good. The husband isn't a member, but he's apparently been taught everything, and he even goes to church nearly every week (even Sunday School sometimes). It just seems like he doesn't have the faith to act/keep commitments right now, but we're hoping we can continue to work with him.
On Wednesday, we tried fixing Elder Bennett's bike (to no avail), and we made several calls. We then met with this one man in our ward, John, and his ministering brother. John's a really sweet guy, he was baptized about 3 or 4 years ago, but he unfortunately isn't doing well. It was good meeting with him, and his ministering brother drove us to the church and informed us about John's situation as well as his own situation (since his wife isn't a member and we tried meeting with her before). After that, we walked to our member dinner and talked to anyone we could on our way there, and then one of our ward missionaries, Brother Amos, picked us up from the dinner to drive to Bruce's with us. We helped prepare Bruce for the temple and explained some of its various symbols, and we showed him the video of Elder Bednar and Elder Renlund giving a virtual tour of the Rome, Italy temple. As he drove us home, Brother Amos told us that he had arranged a meeting with the Salters (a family that hasn't been to church in a while but that we've been trying to meet with this whole transfer and that actually expressed interest in having us over) for next week, so that was a pretty neat miracle for us haha.
On Thursday, we had interviews with President, but they were over Zoom :/. It was alright though, we had a good time. After interviews, each companionship also does a companionship study with the APs as well, but our WiFi was so terrible for some reason that they told us to go to the church and that they'd resume the meeting when we have a better connection. So we walked the 45 minutes to the church building so that we could have better wifi lol. Right when we got there, we saw that the Sisters and our district leader were already there with some In-N-Out, so that was funny running into them haha. After the AP study, we had a zoom lesson with one of our members, and then we walked to our dinner appointment (which, fortunately, was just a few streets down from the church haha). On our walk home, we stopped by Anna's house, and her husband answered the door....but he said that they aren't quite ready for religion right now, which was unfortunate. We may try to meet with Anna to see what she thinks and try to promote another spiritual experience with her, but for now, we won't be teaching her family again like we had hoped. But we did have small miracle afterwards. Shortly before we got to our apartment, we talked to a guy on the street, and because he spoke Spanish, I told him about the Spanish Elders (in very poor Spanish because I could only remember Tagalog words lol). We stood there while he talked to the Spanish Elders, and as they said a prayer over the phone, the Spirit was pretty strong, and he was in tears, it was pretty neat. Hopefully they can meet with him again. Also, apparently, in Elder Bennett's interview, President had asked him if he wanted a car because there were extra cars available, but he declined because of all the people on the streets that we would miss if we drove around everywhere. However, after weighing the pros and cons, we decided it would be advantageous to have a car as an extra resource (especially with Elder Bennett's broken bike lol), so we called him later to tell him we'd take the car, and we picked it up this morning (Monday).
On Friday, we had scheduled to have a lesson with a member, and we were planning on getting a ride there and then walking around various neighborhoods up in that part of our area, but she had to cancel, which greatly threw off our plans haha. We made a bunch of calls, updated various spreadsheets/documents we have to keep notes of the people we meet that are in the ward, and then we started walking to the church. On our way there, Brother Amos texted us asking if we had dinner scheduled (which we did not) so he and his wife picked us up and took us to get sushi, which was pretty nice of them, especially so spontaneously haha.
Saturday was pretty similar to Friday. We had a really good lesson over the phone with one of our members. We had challenged him to do an in depth study of 2 Nephi 31 a couple weeks ago, and he told us that he'd really appreciated it and wanted us to send him a verse for every week. We then did some weekly planning, made some calls, and started walking to Bruce's house. We realized that it was taking much longer to get there than we initially thought haha, so we contacted a nearby member who has been in a lesson with him before to pick us up and join in on a lesson with him that night.
On Sunday, we had ward council, church, and our ward mission correlation meeting, and like I said earlier, the meetings seemed much more engaged with coming up with specific plans to help certain people in the ward, and the ball seems to be rolling in regards to coordinated efforts from members and missionaries. We then did some family history and studies, and then we got picked up for a dinner appointment. Afterwards, we got dropped off at the church to make some calls. One of the members that we called was the caretaker of John, and she told us all about his condition; her general situation with him, his family, and her family; and told us about her neighbors that she wants us to meet. All in all, the call took nearly 3.5 hours if that gives you some context about her and John's situation and everything she had to explain haha, so we'll be definitely trying to help them out and stop by John again this week.
I hope you all are having a wonderful week, there are miracles occurring everyday in your life as you ask for them and have the faith to look for them, no matter what's going on around you. Even though Elder Bennett and I are having difficulties finding people to teach, we are still able to see those small day to day miracles and continue to find joy in the work, and I promise that those blessings are there for you too.
See you next time,
Elder Enger
