Tagalog classes part 2
Dear friends and family,
This week was more or less the same as last week. I could notice by the end of the week that my teachers were using more and more Tagalog when explaining instructions to us (they use some English here and there), and we're expected to use it a bit more than we have, but we're still mainly expected to just use what we know and speak Taglish to the best of our abilities.
In my classes, we've continued to memorize phrases for each principle taught in the first lesson, and we've been practicing teaching each individual principle. So far, I think my smoothest and most clear subject I've practiced teaching in class has been talking about the Book of Mormon, so I hope I can continue to have that confidence and composure when it comes to that topic at least. We've also been doing more roleplay scenarios in Tagalog to practice meeting people on the street or getting to know them or resolving their concerns. Sometimes I feel a bit awkward as I search for something to say in English before I translate it to Tagalog, and hopefully I'll be more bold in the field after enough practicing, but for right now, I'll just deal with the 15 second pauses needed to respond to whatever someone has said haha. Despite that, my teachers and my tutor have been impressed with my grasp on the language thus far and my ability to create complex sentences off the top of my head, so thankfully that aspect of the teaching/roleplay is going well.
My companionship also had our first Tagalog teaching experience yesterday. It was....alright. I think haha. The Internet kicked me out of Zoom in the middle of the part I was teaching, and I missed the whole middle section of the lesson. Luckily, I got back in right when I was supposed to recite the First Vision, I was able to bear my testimony about faith and the Book of Mormon, and one of my companions was able to pull a really applicable scripture out of thin air that we hadn't planned for beforehand. It could've gone better, but I think we still did a good job, all things considered.
On Tuesday, we had a devotional with a pre-recorded video from Elder Anderson, and he talked about how younger people tend to be more receptive to the gospel as well as more willing to share it to others. It was good, but I had some regret that I didn't share the gospel as much before my mission. I mean, if I know the gospel is true, and it has given me such joy, peace, purpose, and understanding, shouldn't I be willing to share that with those around me when applicable? Hopefully, I can do better at that from now on.
Outside of class, things are still going well. I've gone on walks and played games with my family (Harper actually beat me in air hockey for the first time haha). My girlfriend dropped off a gift: a book called The Infinite Atonement. I've heard good things about it, and I'm excited to read it. From what I know, it delves deep into the purpose and meaning of the Atonement of Jesus Christ in order to help us better appreciate and understand His Atonement as well as apply it more in our own lives.
Anyway, there's my exciting week. I hope I enthralled you with my witty and explosive narrative of this week's events, and I hope you all are doing well also.
Sincerely,
Elder Enger
